In a six-month period, the initiative can help you engage with community stakeholders on development objectives. The process is based on a series of four community workshops that strengthen the design and development literacy for participants.

Our team of facilitators and design and development experts provides a neutral setting in these workshops because we’re not invested in any specific outcome. The result is a learning moment where community members discover the connection between design, use, and market realities.

How this process benefits community members.

By educating them about market and financial realities, this process enables community members to participate more meaningfully in setting development goals. They get a clear answer to the question that’s often a stumbling block in redevelopment – “What is an appropriate scale for this project?”

The cornerstone of the initiative process is a consensus-building, interactive, block exercise that gives citizens a hands-on opportunity to explore different development options. They begin to appreciate and understand financial issues and tradeoffs that developers work through when considering various projects for a particular site. Ultimately, they create and endorse development guidelines to promote specific sites to developers in a way that’s consistent with community interests and informed by city goals.
